Whole Yellow Peas Rice - Kids Lunch Box

Whole Yellow Peas belong to legume family and they are rich in protein. Our weekly lunch has one whole legume dish. I prepare yellow peas gravy with steamed rice or one pot yellow peas rice. Since I use dried yellow peas, I soak them overnight in tap water and pressure cook them for 2 whistles. I made this rice for my son's lunch box. It requires steamed rice and cooked yellow peas. This rice does not have onion or spices. But if your kid eats little bit of spice, you can red chilli powder to taste.

This is what I packed for Chintu today - yellow peas rice , steamed corn kernels with a hint of lemon and butter ,  2 cookies and water :)

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Steamed rice
  • 1/4 Cup Cooked whole yellow peas
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Oil

  • 1/4 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • a pinch of turmeric powder
  • a pinch of hing / asafoetida
  • a pinch of freshly ground pepper

Directions

1. Soak whole yellow peas overnight. Wash them twice with tap water and pressure cook with 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch of turmeric powder

2. In a pan, heat oil. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, urad dal and cumin seeds. fry on low flame until the mustard splutters

3. Then turmeric powder, hing and immediately add cooked yellow peas. Give it a nice stir

4. Add 1 tablespoon water, salt and pepper
