Homemade Chai Concentrate

Huge fan of Chai ? Love drinking tea everyday , but lazy to prepare fresh tea on a busy day? Try making this black tea concentrate and keep it handy in the refrigerator. All you need to do is, mix this spiced, sweetened concentrate with hot milk and your masala chai is ready in no time.





Homemade tea concentrate is cheaper and made with all natural ingredients and the best thing is you can adjust the spices according to your taste. You can give this as a gift or send it with your husband / kids when they are travelling.

This recipe for black tea concentrate is very versatile. You can add / remove any spices that you are not a big fan of.

Yield : 1/2 Litre Black Tea concentrate 
 6 Cups of milk Chai

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups of water
  • 1 Inch fresh Ginger sliced into coins
  • 10 Cardamom pods or 1 Tablespoon of ground cardamom
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 Star Anise ( star anise has a pretty strong flavor. If you are not a fan of star anise, please do not add this spice )
  • 1/4 Cup whole leaf loose black tea or 8 Tea bags
  • 1/4 Cup Organic Honey ( adjust according your taste )

For the Flavor ( optional ) 

  • 2 Tablespoon Orange peel
  • 1 and 1/2 Teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions 

1. In a sauce pan, add water and bring it to boil. Add in ginger , cardamom, cinnamon stick, star anise, orange peel and boil the water on medium flame for 15 to 20 minutes until the water reduces to almost half of the original quantity
2. Switch off the flame. Add tea leaves or the tea bags and close the pan with a lid. Let the tea steep in for 10 minutes
3. Strain the entire mixture through a very fine sieve into a different sauce pan
3. Add honey , molasses and vanilla extract to the tea and give it a nice stir
4. Return the sauce pan to medium heat and bring it to boil
5. Switch off the flame and let the tea concentrate cool completely
6. Now transfer the concentrate into a airtight container or glass bottle and store in refrigerator for up to 1 week
7. Alternatively, you can pour this tea concentrate in ice trays and freeze it for later use

To Serve : How to make milk Tea using the concentrate

1. For One cup of hot tea : In a sauce pan, add 1/2 cup chai concentrate and 1/2 Cup full cream milk / almond milk and heat. Serve hot
