Stir Fried Cabbage and Green Peas

Stir Fried Cabbage is one of the sides they serve at the Tamil weddings in my home town. They add moong dal and loads of shredded coconut to the cabbage. It tastes fresh and crunchy along with sambar rice. I added green peas and skipped adding moong dal. Other delicious combinations that suits best with cabbage are carrots and green beans. When mom makes cabbage with moong dal, I eat a katori full of side just as such without rice or curry. It is like a semi cooked salad with rich in Vitamin K and protein from Dal.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups shredded cabbage
  • 1/4 Cup Green peas ( thaw if frozen )
  • 1 Small sized onion chopped finely
  • 1 Teaspoon Oil
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Urad Dal
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 Tablespoon Shredded fresh coconut
  • 1 Teaspoon Cilantro leaves for Garnish
  • Salt to taste
  • Black Pepper to taste

Directions

1. In a pan, heat oil. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add urad dal, cumin seeds and fry until the dal is light golden

2. Then add onions and fry for a minute

3. Add cabbage and green peas and mix together or you can toss them gently

4. Add salt and sprinkle a tablespoon water. Cook on high flame for 2 minutes

5. Add shredded coconut, cilantro leaves , black pepper and mix

6. I like cabbage as crunchy in this dish and hence cooked it for just 2 minutes. If you like it soft, you can add a little bit more water and cook for 5 to 10 minutes

7. Serve warm with steamed rice and curry
