Potato Patty for Burgers / Aloo Tikki

Aloo Tikki a snack very famous in North India. It is made of boiled potatoes and spices.  Aloo means 'Potato' and 'Tikki' means croquette or patty. We usually have aloo tikki with tomato ketchup for evening snacks. Kids love these because it is very mildly spiced and flavourful. This one is shallow fried and healthy too !
 

 

 

McDonalds here serve Aloo Tikki burgers. And it is one the best selling burgers for vegetarian/ non meat lovers. I served half the tikki during evening tea. The rest of the tikki I saved for dinner. I made home made wheat buns today and tried to replicate McD's aloo tikki burger at home. Applied a layer of eggless mayonnaise , few lettuce leaves, one aloo tikki and little cheese on the top , a slice of tomato. It was super delicious and quite filling. A different style dinner than the usual rice or roti. We loved it and my son was happy that I can make burgers for him at home. And I was happy that I served him healthy burger with whole wheat bun and veggies, tikki.

                                

Ingredients 

  • 2 Large Size potatoes
  • 2 Medium Sized onions Sliced
  • 3 Tablespoons Oil
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Urad dal (optional)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Tablespoon Corn Flour
  •  3 Tablespoons Semolina / Suji ( You can use fresh bread crumbs )

Directions


1. Boil potatoes along with 1/2 teaspoon salt until they are soft. I boiled them in pressure cooker for 3 whistles

                    


2. Peel skin and discard the skin. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher

                      


3. In a pan, heat oil. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds. When the splutter, add urad dal and fry till the dal is golden

4. Add curry leaves and let them splutter

5. Add coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and mix well
 
                               

6. Turn the flame to the lowest setting. Add onions and fry just until the onions are soft
 
                      
 
                        
 
                      

7. Add the mashed potatoes to the onion mixture and mix well. Add chopped cilantro leaves, dried thyme and mix everything together gently. Check for salt and spice levels. Adjust according to your taste

                               

                                


8. Let the potato mixture cool completely
9. On a greased tray , spread the potato mixture using a spatula to equal thickness. This is done so that we can cut out patties on equal size and equal thickness

                               


10. Using a round cutter, cut out patties. I used a small box lid to cut patties

11. In a small plate mix corn flour and semolina together with little bit of salt and pepper

                      


12. Coat each patties with corn flour mix and set aside

13. In a small frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon oil. When the oil is hot, add the patties one by one. Turn the flame to the lowest setting. Add 4 or 5 patties at a time and shallow  fry until the sides are golden. Flip and fry the other side too. Add oil for to the pan before frying next batch because these tikkis absorb a lot of oil

                            


14. Drain on a paper towel and let it cool
15. Serve with ketchup as a snack or serve it with burger buns as aloo tikki burgers
